ORDER PAGE: CHARTRES LABYRINTH

At the bottom of this form is a place to fill in your choices. First, we shall explain them to you. You may also download a pdf version for mailing, faxing, or for your records: ORDER. Our prices have not changed for seven years.

SIZE

We recommend a size range of 30 to 36 feet for the Chartres labyrinth. Under 30 feet things get rather crowded. Above 36 feet, the size and weight of the labyrinth become unmanagable. We have made exceptions, but we didn't find them wholly acceptable.

PATTERN

The best-known Chartres labyrinths may be the ones located at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Their design, however, is a slight departure from the "pure" Chartres in two respects. First, the distace between the labryses (back-to-back 180-degree turns) is narrow in the pure version (the thickness of the line) but wide in the variation (the thickness of the path). The purpose of the wider labryses is to give a place for people to step out of the "traffic" if they want to rest or meditate for a while. Secondly, on the variation, to balance the larger labryses, the space between the petals is painted (in the center). In the pure version, the petals are just lines. Below are illustrations of the two types, with the pure on the left and the variation on the right.

SEAMS

The direction of the seams relates to the axes of the labyrinth, being either horizontal (side to side) or vertical (up and down). When the seams are vertical, there is a seam that extends down the center of the path, which I personally don't like. Therefore, I recommend horizontal seams. However, we get a lot of orders for vertical seams. It's all the same to us. Below, the blue lines represent the sewn seams, whereas the red lines represent the Velcro® partitions. Left is vertical, right is horizontal.

PERIMETER SHAPE

Our trademark is to make the labyrinth 12-sided. This is because the number 12 is very significant to the geometry of the Chartres labyrinth. Another possibility is octagonal, 8-sided. We are fully prepared to do either one. On the left is octagonal (8-sided), on the right is dodecagonal (12-sided). We recommend 12-sided.

PAINTING AND COLOR

The first choice is whether we will paint it or whether you will do it yourself. If we do it, then you must send us your choice of color. You can enclose a color chip (slip of paper of the designated color) with your order, or simply write the name of the color and the manufacturer. We use Behr and Glidden paints, from Home Depot, but we can match any color from any widely distributed company, such as Benjamin Moore, Sherman Williams, etc. For the Chartres labyrinth our most popular color is purple (for liturgical reasons). You can specify "generic purple" if you wish, which comes closest to being our "standard" color. Painting is labor-intensive, so it comprises a considerable savings if you paint it yourself. On the other hand, our expert painters do a magnificant job. We now offer the Chartres labyrinth in rainbow colors.

(Our usual canvas is 6-ft. wide, which requires a seam down the middle of the panel, which is very minor. It can be avoided by using 12-ft. wide material. However, the 12-ft. material is often of poorer quality. That's why we still use the 6-ft. material. However, the 12-ft. is an option.

It is possible to pay half the cost when placing the order and the other half prior to shipment. As these two dates are often just a matter of weeks apart, you may find it more convenient to make a single payment. CREDIT CARD SYSTEM

We accept MasterCard and Visa. If you email your order, please send your card number in the following format, with no spaces or dashes between numbers: Start with three zeros, then the 16 numbers of the credit card, then the expiration date as four digits (MMYY) plus three zeros at the end. If your credit card number were all X's, for example, and the expiration date is YY of ZZ, you would send the following number: 000XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXYYZZ000.

This method of cloaking is intended to defeat any robots that are searching for 16-digit credit card numbers. Actually, the danger of using a credit card over the Internet doesn't come from the moment it is being sent. It comes from leaving it on the host computer and then having someone hack into the computer and steal the numbers. When we receive your order by email, we print out a paper copy and then delete the email. It doesn't stay in our system. If you feel more comfortable with faxing us the order, please do. Or you can divide the numbsers between two emails. Our toll-free fax number is (888) 873-9873. Or you can mail your order with a check to:
